Don’t let the lying liars lie to you. This building was structurally sound (the back wing was separate, structure-wise), and the owner was trying to raise the money to fix it up. Apparently the government is smarter than you.

I had such high hopes for the Historic Preservation movement as a kid in the 70’s. The fact that scenes such as this are still occurring is proof positive that our culture has been in steady, serious, decline since that time. Truly criminal, in addition to wasteful, environmentally nonsensical and culturally irresponsible.
