Sun Theater Exterior, Revisited

Update: The sign was removed and the theater was renovated by the Lawrence Group.

I recently had the opportunity to go on a public tour of the long-suffering Sun Theater in Grand Center.  I looked at the exterior several years ago, and it was fun to come back.  The sign, by the way, is coming down in one piece; it never operated as the Sun Theater but rather its last iteration was the Lynn Theater.  The leaders at Grand Center changed the name, reusing the “N” in the other sign.  The theater has had numerous names over the years, originally opening as a German language theater.

This is easily some of the best terracotta in St. Louis, with a beautiful buff glaze with the not immediately noticeable blue detailing.

It is being renovated to become the new performing arts space for the nearby by charter school.
