Update: I went back and revisited this stretch of Lindell in August of 2022, looking at a demolished neighbor of these two houses.
While the more exclusive private streets nearby hold a vast wealth of stunning architecture, there are a couple of stately homes on the corner of Kingshighway and Lindell that deserve mentioning. I like the one below more than the one above, because it reminds me of one of my favorite mansions in Washington, DC. Look at that house here, at?a later post?and you can see the similarities.
The most striking aspect of the house is the round turret, which seems almost to be a distant holdover from Richardsonian Romanesque, but in a Beaux-Arts, Gilded Age sort of way. Note the false windows that contain the chimney flues, presumably.
The port-coacher is a great detail, if a bit narrow for a modern automobile.
I imagine that Lindell and Kingshighway were not the racetracks that they are nowadays; sadly, these houses now sit in what I would consider a traffic purgatory.

Love this site! I was curious to see if there was anything on my childhood home and came across your blog. Have to say I love it. My mother lived in our family home in Dutchtown for over 40 years. We were told it was over 100 years old. Basically a sqauare with huge windows to try and catch the breezes. If you would like to drive by I would gladly give you the address. Mom sold it about 10 years ago, maybe more but it is still home to us. Keep up the good work.

I grew up in this house. Swasey was the architect and this was his last St. Louis house before moving to a more lucrative career in New York designing commerical buildings.
I heard this home was remarkable in every aspect and built in 1902 to entertain family and friends for the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair. You were definitely Blessed to have grown up in this masterpiece of a home.
