Built in 1961, this Modernist apartment tower was designed by H. Waldman of Architectural Design Associates, built by Millstone Construction with engineering provided by Arthur Monsey. It is one of two Modernist towers built, bringing major development to an end along Skinker west of Forest Park.
Interesting. I would have guessed that the building would have been much newer than 1961. It certainly is a much better looking modern building than the Dorchester down the street IMO.
What is the purpose of the square plates projecting from all four corners of the roof? Quite a view from the penthouse (?) on top!
Good eye, Tom. There are the remnants of what look to be neon light bulbs. I don’t remember these lights ever working, but I wonder if anyone reading this does.
The plates are part of a track that runs around 3 sides of the building for the cables which support the platforms for exterior maintenance like window washing .
Interesting! I’ve always wondered what those were. Thanks for explaining.
Hi
801 Skinker was designed by my father, Herbert Wahlmann, of Architectural Design Associates, a partnership with architect Richard Hafner. They also designed the original Northwest Plaza shopping center.
Hope you can correct.
Thank you,
Gwyn Wahlmann
Thank you for letting me know! I got my information off the National Register Nomination. That concerns me there is an error in the Nomination. I would love to talk to you about your father’s work, by the way.
