One of the great things about Soulard are the large number of antebellum houses, now well restored from their mid Twentieth Century decline. Simple architecture, which is actually in some ways Greek Revival with the dentillated cornices and simple post and lintel construction for windows and doors, predominates. I strongly suspect that some of their Second Empire neighbors are actually late Nineteenth Century renovations. Side porches also allude to the little bit of actual French colonial architecture still left in the city.
HA, you managed to get my now-totaled 2013 Ford Focus in one of your pix, the one with the STL City flag, the Urban Chestnut decal, and the St. Louis City “resident” decal w/the seal. Must have been a Saturday, as I usually park on Eighth, and go to the Market.
Oh, and if you hadn’t noticed, one of the houses along Eighth (1814?; the black Ford pu is in front of it) has one of the only two insurance plaques that I know of in the City. I can’t recall where the other one is now. These plaques are all over the Georgetown neighborhood in DC, and were essentially proof that you could pay the local fire dept. for their services. Something like that, anyway. Been a while since I read about them. It’s located right underneath the cornice, dead center. I’m so glad it wasn’t removed when the facade was repointed a few years ago.
