Washington, Illinois, March 2022

I last photographed Washington, Illinois back in August of 2019, and I was passing through so I thought I was take a look around. My grandfather helped dig the basement of the church above with his team of horses back in the early Twentieth Century. This house nearby unfortunately has suffered a recent fire. I…

North Side of Washington Park, Downtown Quincy, Illinois

Hampshire Street in between 4th and 5th street contains an exceptional row of Italianate buildings that are more or less well-preserved since the Nineteenth Century. Some are missing their cornices or their first floors have been altered, but for the most part, they look the same as when they were built. The Italianate style, like…

Washington, Illinois, August 2019

Update: I went back in March of 2022. I returned to Washington, Illinois, and snapped a couple of quick photographs of the bank building on the square in downtown, which I realized I had not documented in a decade since these pictures. I also explored some of the side streets, where there are some fantastic…

Looking Back at Pleasantview Road, Washington Township, Tazewell County, Illinois

Update: I went back to Pleasantview Road in August of 2019. I’m eternally fascinated by the relatively isolated Pleasantview Road, with its beautiful barns and farmhouses. The rubble up above used to be a corn crib, I believe. Pleasantview School, slowly converted to storage lockers, seems to have stalled out. That beautiful Italianate farmhouse continues…

Damaged Barn Still Standing, Washington, Illinois

Update: The barn has been demolished. Somehow, perhaps merely for sentimental reasons, the owner of the severely damaged, but historic barn on the edge of the sprawl in Washington, Illinois, has kept it still standing.

Irish Lane, Unzicker Road and Pleasantview Road, Washington Township, Illinois

Due to the increased productivity of farm machinery, there simply is not as much of a need for individual farmsteads.  They increasingly are abandoned, their buildings disappearing one by one. The remnants of past higher population density remain, such as the school house below, itself sitting next to what seems to be an abandoned farmhouse….

Redevelopment at Pleasantview School, Washington Township, Central Illinois

Woah, something has been happening at the old Pleasantview School!  We learned from our family’s friend (and distant cousin to my father, possibly six degrees removed) who had actually attended the school as a boy that the building is being converted into public storage.  The asbestos abatement had to occur first, which explains the plastic…

Barn, Washington, Illinois

Update: The barn was still standing in 2013 but it is now gone. A barn I featured last year has fallen on hard times. I don’t know if it was hit by storm, or if it’s being torn down. My father informed me it would be a great loss, as the structure of the barn, built…
