The building, 4006 S. Broadway, is owned by Ameren.
I’m wondering if if had an original “civic” purpose, as the roof has a long skylight, which in some instances provided light/ventilation to a gym.

OT, but I had to look at that tiny building adjacent to it.

Unlike STL County’s Assessor’s site, the City’s has no information about the age or any building details other than tax history and requests for the City to perform work. Apparently Ameren likes to pay the property tax late…

The 1938 Sanborn Fire Insurance map lists it as a Union Electric Sub-Station building. Built in 1917.

Awesome, thanks, Adele. Where do you have access to the 1938 maps?

      1. Adele H. says:

There are a handful of 1924-1938 maps on the Sanborn map database at the library.

      Great!
I wonder why Ameren stripped the inscription from above the front door? Possibly because it read “Union Electric?” I also wonder the purpose of the long skylight?
