There are some nice monuments near the entrance of Calvary Cemetery, some modern, some more classical. I took a look on a sunny day.

In a Roman Catholic cemetery, there are more overt crucifixes, such as the one below

Christ as depicted in the Garden of Gethsemane can be seen through the columns above and also in the first image. Here is a detail of his face below.

Below, the Madonna of Mercy is depicted on the monument below.

Two more monuments with crucifixion scenes follow.

Two angels flank the figure of Christ below; most of the crucifixions depict Christ with a single nail holding his feet to the cross. According to some Christian traditions, there were actually two nails, making a total of four nails, but the Roman Empress Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, threw one of the nails into the Adriatic Sea to calm a storm.

I’m intrigued by the two angels; they remind me of the angels commissioned from Michelangelo for a church in Bologna–one of the few works the sculptor completed outside of Florence and Rome. I had the opportunity to see them in Bologna two years ago.

The stone is granite, so it is extremely hard, but the sculpting is still well done.

There is a more conservative monument nearby, with a Corinthian colonnade surrounding a sarcophagus for the Shaughnessy Family.

A more modern monument with a bronze low relief sculpture finishes up what I photographed at the cemetery.
