McNair Avenue north from Arsenal in Benton Park is easily one of my favorite streets in St. Louis, and its variety of houses from different generations, along with the beautiful rehabs, make it truly unique.
Second Empire houses of two or three stories sit next to Italianate and Romanesque Revival houses from the 1860s to 1890s.
And, as intended, there are restaurants that are embedded within the neighborhood, encouraging residents to walk the streets and create life along McNair.
And then, there is that wonderful cluster of little one and a half story workers’ cottages, which are all going to be renovated in the next six months.
The last ones had been sitting vacant for years, but now they are now undergoing a wonderful transformation that restores their beautiful wood dormers and trim.
Then we get to Sidney Street, which is the northernmost major east-west artery in the neighborhood.
This is my block! I live across from the two-story second empire house in the third picture. You should come back and photograph the west side of the street sometime.
I should! My camera was starting to act up at the time and these pictures are blurry.
Hi! It was really neat to see my house in photos 2-3 of the “McNair Avenue from Lynch to Sidney Streets” article. You should walk by again….we’ve stripped 130 years’ worth of paint, got it down to bare wood and made a LOT of repairs. And the paint job is so much better than boring white!
