There are still so many well-preserved buildings left in the St. Louis Place neighborhood, such as this corner store, with an intricate Mansard roof with two pinnacles.
There are also more traditional Second Empire houses but with come more Romanesque Revival window treatments.
I have always like this house below with a rare jerkinhead roof (yes, that’s what it’s called), and one of the few I know of in St. Louis.
But then there’s this survivor, waiting for its neighbors to come back.
The houses along St. Louis Avenue are still doing well, but abandonment is coming.

It would seem a shame that the second and third floor fire escape was added to the interesting front of the building instead of the plain side; perhaps required because of the larger windows which served two separate apartments?
Yes, they were saving money by building one fire escape for two apartments.
