I don’t know why, but I don’t like how nice and clean the Syndicate Trust looks now.
I know what it is, it’s lost its patina.

I could not disagree more. The restoration of the exterior of the massive 17 story Syndicate is the most visible and dramatic sign of the re-birth of Downtown since that of the Paul Brown and the Merchandise Mart, and is yet larger than both. It is also to me a great symbol of triumph in stark contrast to the travesty that occured on the east half of the same block. The only thing I do not like is that the entire glass curtain walled 2nd floor was given over for parking, but after what Craig endured from the powers that be when he proposed saving the entire block, I do not blame him in the least for shunning use of the concrete pile next door.
Don’t get me wrong, I think it is fantastic that the building was so well renovated. I’m just a sucker for a tiny bit of grime left on buildings to allow the stone carvings to appear more legible.
I understand why the pollution and decades of grime were removed, but I do agree and prefer it remain. Yet I also would like to see the Powell Square rehabbed WITH said graffiti in tact. So my views are rather radical and I concede that most potential residents and politicians would prefer a shiny, clean facade. Either way I love the Syndicate and enjoyed seeing the construction throughout my internship at Landmarks Association.
