As a newcomer, this photo summarizes my impression of St. Louis.
Get away from the touristy areas, and the city is not like this.
I agree that the entire city is not like this (we bought a house in the city). But enough areas are that it feels piecemeal; there isn’t a “city center” but rather scattered islands of buildings.
That’s because we keep tearing them down for surface parking lots. Oh how I loath surface parking lots!
