I’ve looked at Bartmer Avenue in the Chamberlain Addition several times over the years, starting all the way back in April of 2012. This is Gamble’s Second Subdivision of Rose Hill, from 1871, which shows just how early this area was originally platted. We’re going to start at close to the city limits at Hodiamont Avenue and head east. You can see the houses on this street on Horton Place’s Sanborn map.

Interestingly, there is a new in-fill house, which is constructed to look like a traditional African dwelling.

Houses, as is so often the case, came much later, probably a decade or two, as can be seen from the architectural styles.

There are only a few abandoned buildings but many vacant lots.

I feel like I’ve photographed the house below before.

Soon we reach Hamilton Avenue.
