Update: The building above was destroyed by fire in December of 2022; scroll down to the bottom for images. I do the “North Up Blair Avenue” post every so often, but this time I strayed off that exact path a bit. This is the corner of North 20th and Ferry streets in the Hyde Park…

West Florissant Avenue Between Athlone and Red Bud Avenues
The row of houses in between Athlone and Red Bud on West Florissant Avenue facing O’Fallon Park is perhaps one of the most perfect and serendipitous streetscapes in the City of St. Louis. It is a shame that many of the houses are now falling vacant, and that the street in front of them is…
West Florissant Avenue Between Warne and Alice Avenues
I have a feeling that this stretch of West Florissant, where I presume a series of streetcar line once intersected, once hummed with life back fifty years ago. I have photographed the buildings below on several occasions, such as in December of 2016, and in February of 2017. Further up the street, two buildings that…
East Alice Avenue Between Algernon Street and West Florissant Avenue
Closer to the College Hill neighborhood, the O’Fallon neighborhood’s architecture is older, and dates to the Nineteenth Century. Much of it has been abandoned, and there are many vacant lots. I had been down this street before in February of 2019.
East Fair Avenue Between Grant and Algernon Streets
South of O’Fallon Park, there are more amazing single family houses and also two-family flats “disguised” as they are throughout the city to look like single family houses. Around the corner on Algernon, I was concerned to discover that the northernmost of the two “Elegant Twins” looks to be abandoned. It wasn’t back in 2014.
Athlone Avenue Between Rosalie Street and West Florissant Avenue
Much of the O’Fallon neighborhood is in great shape, and I challenge people who think that all of North St. Louis is a giant wasteland to visit the streets to the west of West Florissant. They are proudly owned, and maintained immaculately. Moving east of Carter Avenues, we see how this is the heart of…
Old Bethany Evangelical Church
The old Bethany Evangelical church existed from 1867 to 1971. It moved into this building in 1915. Sadly it is now abandoned again after serving as a ward community center for a few years. A corner store owner I spoke with told me that neighbors hoped that a congregation would purchase the church and reoccupy…
Harris Avenue Between Carter Avenue and Rosalie Street
In between Rosalie and Carter on Harris are a row of beautiful four-family apartment buildings, and some of them are occupied, but many are abandoned and deteriorating. Looking east past Carter towards West Florissant Avenue, the block improves, and the block is strong and well maintained.
Around Rosalie Street and Carter Avenue
At this intersection, Rosalie Street and Carter Avenue begin to diverge, creating at first what are a bunch of triangular and then trapezoidal blocks. Builders didn’t seem to have any problem with that, filling them with urban houses and apartment buildings. The first building was converted into a church, in what looks to be the…
Warne Avenue Between Green Lea Place and West Florissant Avenue
While walking along Warne Avenue, I took a closer look at the ornate bowling alley building on the northwest side of the street just to the southwest of West Florissant Avenue. I had photographed its facade back in September of 2017 (last photo), and it is still vacant. It is interesting to see how commercial…
