We’ll start our tour of Perryville in the courthouse square, with the Perry County Courthouse, constructed in 1904.

The architects were Caldwell and Drake of Columbus, Indiana and the building cost approximately $32,000. It is on the National Register.

And of course there’s a statue of a Union soldier in the lawn out in front. Apparently this area remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War.

We have two wonderful panoramic views of the buildings around the square, clearly taken from the central clocktower of the courthouse.

The panorama above looks to the northeast, and several buildings are clearly recognizable from 1913 in the photographs below.

The panorama below looks directly to the west, so the two wings that are on the left and right are looking to the south and north, respectively.

Like I mentioned before, there is a high level of occupancy in the shops on the square, which is good, as so often we see these storefronts empty due to businesses moving out to the highway on the edge of town.

These two interesting Spanish Revival buildings were on the street just to the southwest of the square.
