Former Most Holy Name, Attacked

Update: See historic photos of the interior here.

Well, this is not good. I was coming from somewhere and when I drove by the former Most Holy Name Roman Catholic Church, I was startled to discover a very bad development.

Much like what doomed St. Augustine’s and what has also happened at St. Mark’s, someone has stolen all of the copper flashing and gutters from the eaves of the roofs, and I mean all of the roofs.

Not even the rectory was spared. Will we see this beautiful edifice torn down in a few years when the walls start spalling off from water infiltration? I hope not.

Chris, do you know the last time you visited or any idea of timeframe? Could this have been done without a crane or boom lift?

I’m sure I’ve driven by since 2019, the last time I’ve photographed the church but this is the first time I noticed. And yes, as St. Augustine proved, you can definitely do it without a crane or lift. They could have probably done it from the interior without anyone seeing it from the outside. Note the open windows on the rectory–they probably reached out and pulled the flashing off that way.

Perfect beginning example of : “The fall of America”…

Well, this one is a goner now…after st Augustine I don’t believe any historic place will be around in st Louis soon.

Disgusting, heartless lowlifes. Should we be thankful they spared the copper cross? And what’s to stop them from coming back to get it? What a joke. Not only have times changed, but pretty soon we will have no evidence left of a time gone by besides what lives at the City Museum.

I think the cross was only spared due to it being too high to reach, much as was the case at St. Augustine.

There are interior picture taken in the last few days on Facebook…the ceiling is coming down all over…

I saw some on Instagram–tragic and deeply saddening.

Probably the same girl…one of the pictures is a large pile of snow inside the building, with freshly fallen plaster on top of it. The only good thing I see is there isn’t a lot of flammable stuff in the main part so it might survive a fire or two…..
