Aldine Place, Destroyed in Part by Irresponsible Land Speculation

Update: As of the summer of 2021, all of the abandoned buildings have been demolished.

I covered this block years ago, and reported on how reckless speculation left these buildings abandoned. It is just trashed around here, right by a major intersection like MLK Dr and Kingshighway.

This style of apartment building is quite common across the city and the older parts of st Louis county. Is there a story behind these buildings and why it is so common?

This is a common apartment style in a lot of cities. They usually have a center hallway, 2 or 4 flats on each above ground floor, and some combination of flats, mechanicals, storage, and laundry facilities in the basement level.

    Hi, Chris—

I am visiting my 83yo aunt who was telling me about the four-family flat her father owned on Aldine Pl. and I asked if it was still there and she said yes. I looked up the address and Google showed that the whole street was barren of buildings and now only a grassy plain. She didn’t know. I went to look for pictures of the buildings via Google images and, thankfully, you’d covered this block here on St. Louis Patina! You are a gem. Thank you for covering so much of this city of ours— good, bad and in disrepair!
