Lafayette Avenue, long replaced by I-44, is lined with some stunning houses on it, and its side streets. Above is a funeral parlor, probably built for that function.
Above, this stately Second Empire mansion sits in the trees; I’ll come back when the leaves have fallen.
And I love the Romanesque Revival style, which has been frittered away by demolition, but this fantastic one survives, just missing the interstate right-of-way.
And my, look at that second floor balcony–surely one of the most unique structures in the city.
There has been some tasteful in-fill, as well. I remember when the house below was bombed out and vacant. No more.
And look at this large, Second Empire alley house around the corner. A rarity, indeed.

Oh, My Goodness -I recognized the first picture of the old Schnur funeral home immediately! While it has no web site, it is still in business. Hoo-ray!
As a kid in the ’40-’50s, i spent many evenings there, as it was the funeral home of choice for my large maternal family.
OT, but I did not realize that the term “parlor” was still viable!
I like old fashioned terms like parlor.
