Cementland, April 2023

Cementland, for those who haven’t heard, has been sold to a barge and commodities company, and judging from recent satellite images, much of the structures built on the property have been cleared.

I went by on a recent Saturday and there is a new gate on the front entrance, and evidence of earth having been moved around.

The site was originally one of the largest, if not the largest, Portland cement plants in the world.

What many people do not realize is that there was an accompanying property with river frontage that had originally been part of the cement plant and was also sold to the company who bought the main parcel on the west side of Riverview Drive.

You can just barely see through the trees a metal superstructure stretching out into the waters of the Mississippi. I was told recently that this is furthest north dock on the river that does not freeze over in the winter.
