Update: I revisited the corncrib in May of 2024.
Something about this abandoned corncrib and this copse of trees drew me to photograph the group as I drove east down Cooper Road near my family’s farm.
Surely there is a backstory behind why this building is left behind, and who planted the two trees that now are standing by the road.
I’ve also long been fascinated by how trees in winter look like the blood vessels and capillaries of the human body when shown against the background of the sky.
I love how your newer stories link you to the past. Without looking at old fire insurance maps (if one exists for this area, I’d love to find it) my guess is that corn crib was acutally a barn on an old homestead. Those trees are probably older than the barn and would have been at the entrance to a gravel drive that went up to the house that was there at some time. The house possibly burned down, or the family “moved to the city” and tore down the house, the chicken coop (with a root cellar for cold storage) and maybe another small shed. The land being more profitable for farming was plowed up. That large pole, with the metal tent, probably carried the electricity to the farmhouse.
