Unlike most of the area south of Delmar Boulevard which is being repaired following the May 16, 2026 tornado, there was one building, the Chesterfield, that was not so lucky. Hit by the twister and then damaged further by a fire on January 24, 2026, the building was condemned for demolition. I caught a photo of the last portion being demolished. This is probably the largest structure destroyed directly or indirectly by the tornado. To see what it looked like before, see my post from October of 2014.
What a loss!
That is what Mom named her home along then Olive Street Road (nowadays Blvd) before there were street numbers. The mail went to the post office in downtown Chesterfield and had to be collected by the addressee. There was no mail delivery then. Our home, named Chesterfield was photographed for Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, but then those photos were never used. Dad had built Mom a beautiful Mid-Century Modern home. I was small enough to fit into one of the built in drawers. Sadly no pictures exist on Google any longer. The acerage is the outbelt and Olive now. Thanks, Chris.
IT MUST HAVE BEEN ENERGIZING JUST TO COME HOME. LIKE LIVING IN THE DAKOTA IN NYC ? THIS WAS NOT USED SHOWER DOOR ARCHITECTURE .
