End of Spring 2026 Odds and Ends

It’s that time of year, so it’s time for odds and ends! Above is a spandrel from a storefront in downtown Belleville, looking suspiciously like something Louis Sullivan would design. Below is just another house we found while driving around town.

Cleveland High School is looking really, really bad compared to earlier visits; I first looked at it back in August of 2013.

Some good below: Second Presbyterian is seeing its clay tile repaired, which has required the installation of some of the most complex scaffolding I have ever seen.

Heading south down North Broadway in Baden, I snapped these houses below.

I also realized I had never looked at this commemorative plaque on the corner of West Florissant and Calvary avenues for Bellefontaine Cemetery.

We also accidentally drove right by the sinkhole downtown before they started shutting off the streets and interstates around it.

Finally, I didn’t fit in Arlington House, an antebellum house in Birmingham, Alabama. It was built before there was even a Birmingham.

What has happened to those public school buildings? Are the deteriorating to the point of being torn down? What has happened to the land? Asking for a friend.
