I’ve really enjoyed the photos from Portland! I’ve never been to that part of the country and I think it’s interesting to see the differences in historic structures. Like the fact that brick wasn’t used as extensively there as it was here. Perhaps because of our abundance of clay soil, and isn’t Maine rather rocky? It looks to be a beautiful city.

Yes, I think the rockiness of the soil, coupled by large forests nearby helped make wood a more common building material in Portland.
