Former Faith-Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church, Jennings

Built in 1953, the former Faith-Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church in West Florissant Avenue in Jennings boasts a massive 115 feet long by 15 feet high stained glass window.

Designed by Frederick Dunn, whose name comes up frequently in the 1950s for the designs of Modernist churches, it is perhaps one of his more simple works.

According to a newspaper article at the time, the congregation had actually asked for a simpler design in order to save money on construction. The price ended up at $125,000, or $300 per seat for 400 worshipper capacity; supposedly a more traditional Gothic Revival church the congregation considered would have been $700 per seat in the sanctuary.

And of course, not surprisingly, the windows were designed and created by Emil Frei & Associates.

Dunn was a talented designer – I think he did work for Jos. Pulitzer’s CWE home entry door . Faith Lutheran Church was ,prior to this site ,located on No. Kingshighway . It became All Saints high Episcopal church with a dedicated congregation of primarily African American families .
