West 15th and Iowa Streets, Dubuque, Iowa

Turning off Central Avenue onto 15th Street, we head into what I believe was an Irish Catholic workers’ neighborhood. St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, which I did not get a chance to photograph, faces Jackson Park, which is the centerpiece of the area.

The houses all tend to be duplexes, where the houses are mirror images of each other along the party wall which separate the two sides down the middle.

The majority of the houses face the north-south streets.

These pictures remind me of buildings you would find in Old North or Hyde Park areas in STL.

I agree, and many of them were probably built around the same time.

Based on historical Dubuque records, “Schultz Town” was a nickname for a German immigrant neighborhood located on the lower part of Seminary Hill, specifically centered around the area of West 15th, 16th, and 17th Streets near Iowa Street, extending toward the base of the bluff. This area, often referred to as part of the “Flats” or lower Seminary Hill, was known for its dense German population in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
