I was actually impressed with the Castle Point neighborhood; it has stunning mature trees and overall well-maintained properties.
Unfortunately, the travails of the River Gardens School District is still always present.
This school was a religious school until last year, when it apparently when out of business.
This school was named Thomas when it was a part of the RGSD. Also, this subdivision was Hathaway Manor, which was the nicer neighbor of Castle Point. East of Monarch was Castle Point, West of Monarch was Hathaway. Hathaway Manor had nicer, slightly newer ranch style houses, many of them at least partially brick. Castle Point proper was smaller, cracker-box houses as seen along the "Castle" streets; Lord, Earl, Duke, Count, Prince. I havent driven through the area recently, but in the 90's there was a distinct difference in the care and maintenance of property between the two neighboring areas.
I went to Thomas Elementary in 68, 69, 70 and 71 before we moved to Florissant, MO. I have great memories from that school. K thru 3rd grade. I lived over off of Chambers and Green Valley Drive but took the bus to school every day.
That makes sense, and corresponds with what my friend told me that grew up that way, though not in Castle Point proper. We saw the area wit the cracker-box houses, and it is BAD shape, mostly abandoned and for some reason we didn't take any pictures. Thanks for the info.
My family lived in Hathaway Manor from about 1957 to 1963. I went to kindergarten and first grade at Thomas School. There was a Catholic church and school–St. Casimir’s–in the area too, but eventually that church moved to another part of St. Louis County.
I agree with Topher–Hathaway Manor was considered nicer than Castle Point even 50 years ago. My mother would not let us cross Monarch to play there. When we lived in Hathaway Manor, it was a nice neighborhood to grow up in; not fancy, but safe, with lots and lots of kids.
My family lived across the street of Thomas grade school in 58 or “59. Moved to Phoenix in “60 . I would love to see A picture of the neighborhood I loved it I lived on Viscount Dr.
Remember the address on Viscount? My family moved into a house across the street in 1960
10345 I believe
I lived at 10118 Viscount Drive 1972-1976 My father got transferred to Ga. He was happy because the neighborhood had become bad! I sure miss growing up there and walking to school right up the street!
I meant 60 years ago in my post above!
