Granite City Steel Building, Revisited

North City and Granite City 078

Update: See some of the older buildings in downtown nearby that were adapted to the Modernist era.

Surrounded by abandoned buildings and parking lots, the Granite City Steel Building was cutting edge when it opened in 1958 to the designs of Sverdrup and Parcel, and is largely preserved in its original state, save for the painting of its wall panels from orange to blue.  See better pictures here, and see the lobby here.  I sometimes wonder if the surrounding vacancy will diminish and the building will no longer be an island.
