Illinois Avenue Between Miami and Potomac Streets

Illinois Avenue just north of Miami Street starts off with some severely muddled houses, each one modified from their original appearance.

And then comes a wide variety of Second Empire houses, all from different epochs of the style as it evolved in the 1880s and 90s.

And then a one story bungalow is thrown in.

The evolution of two story houses can be witnessed, as well, as wood cornices are replaced with dentillated brick cornices and even pressed tin cornices around the turn of the Twentieth Century.

This evolution of cornices can perhaps be even better seen in these three houses, all with Mansard roofs of the Second Empire but all each showing older to newer from left to right.
