The August Kassebaum House sits on Lemay Ferry Road just north of Butler Hill Road; it was built in 1907 at the unincorporated village of Mattese.

Designed by William Wedemeyer, its advanced ornament and design shows just how wealthy Kassebaum had become as a merchant out in this isolated corner of South County. His storefronts, just to the south, are now a giant vacant lot, showing evidence of having been demolished very recently!

I couldn’t figure out what is going on with the house, which shows the evidence of lacking some preventable maintenance.

Here’s a crappy photo I snapped of the John Fried House, which dates from 1867, just to the south of the Kassebaum House.

NextStl has an item featuring the building that was torn down, https://nextstl.com/2021/03/demo-alert-quiktrip-plans-to-replace-the-kassebaum-building-in-south-stl-county/.
I was glad to see that the home was not torn down when it was made into a salon, it closed about three years ago and has been on and off the market for sale.
