I have some leftover photos from the summer that I needed to clear out. Above, this house has collapsed on West Florissant Avenue just north of Grand Boulevard in the College Hill neighborhood, unfortunately. The house below is in Hyde Park, and I originally looked at it back in August of 2018.

The infamous gas station that was at the heart of the Board of Aldermen federal corruption convictions is still sitting half complete, and I’m sure it’s a continued annoyance to the people of the area around it.

I also happened to be driving by the house on Fout Place recently, and more of the roof has collapsed, unfortunately.

I spotted these houses nearby in the Lewis Place neighborhood.

And I happened to be near Union Station this summer.

The historic photo below is one I particularly love for a reason that is not readily apparent. Look closely in the upper left quadrant. See that smokestack? That is actually the ventilation chimney for the Eads Bridge tunnel! It no longer exists but for easily a century is stuck up about a hundred feet where there’s now a parking garage on Washington Avenue. No one thought the need to photograph the strictly utilitarian and dirty structure, and it only exists in the background of photographs of more important buildings.

Below is the stucco ceiling of the entryway of what I think was a department store in downtown Cape Girardeau. I’ll get back down there at some point and take a real thorough look at that historic town some point in the future.

And finally, that abandoned house in Eureka, Illinois, that we spotted years ago in September 2010 and then more recently in July of 2022, still sits empty, though someone keeps the huge swath of grass lawn around it mowed perfectly.

Thank you for these visual documentations of our community values and failings!
