Liggett & Meyers Tobacco Company Factory, McReeTown, Revisited

Update: Redevelopment has come to one of the buildings not pictured here.

I went back to the American Tobacco Company, or more commonly known as the Liggett & Meyers Tobacco Company to shoot the intersection of Folsom and Thurman for DartSTL.

This factory was huge, but that is not perhaps what is most striking about the complex.

The large octagonal smokestack, which other people have told is their favorite in St. Louis, dominates the neighborhood.

I was struck by the juxtaposition of the smokestack with the ornament of the company’s logo on the corner of the building.

Star Tobacco. Five Star was a popular brand. Have you seen the other side of the octagonal smokestack? If I remember correctly, it says Star Tobacco, or just Star, on it, with the “writing” set into the bricks. Odd that it’s facing roughly northeast.

I think one of the amazing things about this whole complex is that two of the larger buildings in the complex have been razed, as indicated by the foundations along Folsom.
