I was giving a tour of Parkway South to Found St. Louis on Friday before the Homecoming football game and was startled to discover every horizontal surface has now been covered with vinyl tiles. What is up with that? Ever heard of texture? It didn’t used to be like that.
The floor covering shown is commonly called “vinyl tile” which is made from polyvinylchloride with pigmentations for color; mildew and oxidation inhibitors, and stabilizers for prolonged life and either impact modifiers or plasticizers to promote a desired level of flexibility. It is commonly marketed in squares of 12 or 24 inch size in the US which is what is pictured. It is also marked in rolls of 6 or 12 ft widths. Linoleum originally was a trademarked mixture of cork and linseed oil with color pigments but by common use was a vinyl sheet sold as rolls of 6 or 12 ft widths. The material shown is vinyl tile.
