We were wandering down Main Street in St. Charles and realized I hadn’t really taken very good photos of these buildings, which are primarily in the Greek Revival style.

I’ve photographed some of them before in September of 2014.

These are some very old houses, and their backsides are of interest, too.

Most are built of stone, which shows they are probably built before the Civil War, and before the brick industry had expanded out here to provide the necessary critical mass for widespread use of the building material.

Note that many of the houses would have originally been equipped with balconies.

This building below has an interesting story; note that the lintels of the windows are simple like in a Greek Revival building.

Coming around to the side, it is obvious that the third half story was altered sometime after the Civil War to create a Mansard Roof, thereby making it a full third story. I’ve seen this throughout the City of St. Louis.
