Maple Avenue Between Goodfellow and Belt Avenues, West End

H.H. Bregstone, Maple Avenue, East of Goodfellow Avenue, c. 1913, Missouri History Museum, N39030

Update: I revisited this block in December of 2025.

Maple Avenue was once a dense and urban street, but it was hit hard by demolition due to the West End urban renewal plan in the 1960s.

Right at the corner was the Dozier Elementary School, sadly demolished for a lackluster apartment complex that no doubt will be razed in due course.

What’s interesting to see, comparing the earlier and later photos of the school, is that it received at least two additions: one to the east, and then another more modern one in the middle of the original two wings.

Update: The building above was demolished in the summer of 2019.

Maple Avenue through the West End shows the beauty of this part of the city north of Delmar. It is sad to see how much is abandoned.

Update: The block below is actually further south and is looking east down Enright Avenue from Belt Avenue.
