Marquette Avenue West of Jamieson Avenue

I’m fascinated by the short, quiet streets tucked in between the River des Peres/Interstate 44 and Jamieson Avenue.

Many of the houses are from the late Nineteenth Century, and reflect what would have been distant suburbs from the city at the time.

Below is one seriously messed with facade.

But I find this area, so isolated, to be so interesting, with wood frame houses that aren’t supposed to exist in the city limits of St. Louis. And yes, already by 1876 this was the city, and these houses were built after that date.

Always look towards the back of what appear to be vacant lots; this could be one of the first houses built in the area.

But houses were still being built into the 1930s or 40s.

Those houses are extremely close to downtown Maplewood as the crow flies. At one time, there was a bridge on Fyler across the River des Peres and the railroad connecting this area to Maplewood.
