We continue our walk around downtown Muscatine, passing by Wesley United Methodist Church, walking down West 4th Street.

We then cut through a parking lot.

The Muscatine County Courthouse was constructed in 1907 according to designs by J.E. Mills of Detroit.

It was under rehabilitation when we went by, with what looks to be brand new copy sheathing on the cupola of the central tower.

And it wouldn’t be an Iowa town square without a Civil War monument!

Obviously the above courthouse is not the original courthouse from the founding of Muscatine County in 1837; there were at least two more before the current one.

This is apparently the original sheriff’s house with a jail built in the rear from 1857, which supplemented a courthouse built in 1841.

It was built for $12,500 and was replaced by a new jail in 1909.

I particularly liked Trinity Episcopal Church below, which looked like it could have been from Ireland or the Scottish highlands.

The current structure, the second one, apparently dates from 1851, making it one of the oldest in the area.

We then looked around the northeastern part of downtown, where there are some nice commercial buildings.

We spotted this handsome house on the way out of town, which is the GW Woodard/Peter Mussar House.

This photo of yours shows the Black Pearl Coffee Shop (featuring Expresso). Just an FYI
