New Target Opens

The new Target is open! I’m not complaining; there is a dearth of shopping east of Grand and it is much needed. But make sure you check your receipt for the added taxes you’re subsidizing to pay for this place…

Plenty of bollards to prevent people from crashing through the front of the store–good thinking for a city such as St. Louis. Also, plenty of “Loss Prevention” employees making the rounds inside and also in the parking lot. This place would get robbed blind otherwise.

This area still makes me laugh; historic maps and photographs show it was always sort of a dingy area with several quarries nearby. It was never really “urban” like some sort of Soho or something like that. It still isn’t. We’ll see what goes in to the west.

The good news is that Captain D’s is back open after their kitchen fire!

Those bollards appear in front of just about every Target store. It’s not just a St. Louis phenomenon. There is a national epidemic of cars and trucks crashing into buildings. BTW, this building is unbearably unattractive. It looks like it is clad in corrugated metal, a reference to the areas manufacturing past? I don’t see how that works in a hot summer climate. In any event, it looks like a quonset hut which are not recommended when the temperatures rise. The air conditioning cost must be off the charts. And what could you fit on those tiny little balconies, patio furniture overlooking a parking lot?
