North Side of Francis Park, St. Louis Hills

South Jefferson and St. Louis Hills 030

Heading clockwise around Francis Park, we encounter this little Orthodox church, and then a string of apartment buildings on the north side of the park. Like their Nineteenth Century ancestors, I always remark at what great lengths builders go in this city to camouflage multi-family dwellings. The architecture defies easy explanation of style, they’re a mix of influences from around Europe and epochs. St. Gabriel the Archangel dominates the street wall.

It appears that the first apartment building has a sort of penthouse on the roof?

      Yes, I believe so.

You forgot to include pictures of the neo-gothic Saint Gabriel Catholic Church which is one of the most impressive structures in St. Louis Hills. Also, don’t forget to take pictures of St. Louis Hills Estates and Saint Raphael Catholic Church on Jamieson.

Indeed some of these 3-story buildings are not apartments but 3 spacious units occupying the entire floor. Very European. Typically one clan lived in a building with older parents occupying on the main floor and an adult son/daughter with their respective families on the other floors. C. Rallo built one such unit across from the park and his descendants still live in the building.
