Deep inside the August A. Busch Conservation Area, walking across the earthen dam that created Lake 37, we were on the hunt for a family cemetery that was left behind when the land was confiscated for the production of munitions for World War II.

This was farmland, of course, that had been settled far back in the early Nineteenth Century.

Finally, we came across the cemetery, hidden deep in an overgrown copse of trees and difficult to see.

This is the Othaniel Castlio Cemetery, named after the patriarch of the family; you can read more about him and his story here.

Apparently the ruins of his house are located nearby, but we did not find them on this trip; perhaps they will be more visible in the winter.

The Busch family has done “allot” for Planet Earth “behind-the-scenes” that goes beyond just Meh-Zur-E / Missouri proper 🙂
