I love this Sanborn Map, almost completely worthless for the needs of fire insurance pricing (can railroad tracks catch on fire?), and bordering more on the abstract. Imagine all of those lines full with trains.
Maybetrain track won’t catch fire, but I expect the cars and their contents certainly could. Could that explain this map at least partly? I really don’t know. But I agree with you that’s it’s a wonderful thing to behold.

The railyards there still look much the same – perhaps almost as many tracks as shown in the map.
When seeing RR tracks from Sanborn, I always wonder if my Grandfather, an engineer for the MOP, ever traveled what I see.
