Redmont Park, Birmingham, Alabama

South of downtown is Redmont Park, and a host of other exclusive neighborhoods and I’ll admit that we probably wandered into other areas as well.

I can say without a doubt that it is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the United States, and these photographs do not do justice showing that.

It got cloudy, and the houses are located up the hill from the street, and I don’t feel like the photographs turned out very well.

This is where the wealthy lived, while the working class lived down in the valley, where the smoke from the furnaces and coke plants settled.

Just like in ancient Rome, the wealthy lived high on the hills, where the winds surely blew much of the smoke away, but probably not all of it.

Predicting modern post-World War II subdivisions, the streets snake around the hillsides, making the area a maze, and making outsiders confused and unwelcome. But Google Maps eliminates that advantage today.
