Run-Down Motel, Bridgeton

As part of my continuing series of run-down motels around the region, we stop by this gem on the northwest side of Interstate 270 in Bridgeton. Anyone have any memories of this place? Clocking in at 2.8 stars at Google Maps, it was part of a trend in hotels in the 1970s where there was a central enclosed pool and entertainment area. Before the advent of bedbugs in America, it could sometimes be fun to stay in these places.

My sister had her wedding reception there in the late 80s. It was fine. Def long in the tooth now. Kind of a weird location also.

One of the first Postmodern buildings with enough patina to make the site. Whoever the architect was, it looks like he had subscriptions to Lotus International and Architectural Design in the 1970s and 80s and decided to put a equal parts Italian postmodern design, late Louis Kahn, and suburban Holiday Inn into a blender. I like the mixture that came out.

Also, America eradicated bed bugs successfully for decades. Then, bed bug infested people brought them back to America. One of the benefits of globalization that we were promised.

It’s definitely Post-Modern, alright! And perhaps a great example of that style in a more accessible building as opposed to an institutional or government building.
