A critical surviving component of the rapidly disappearing Bohemian Hill neighborhood was severely damaged by fire on January 15, 2024. While the front was clearly replaced in the early Twentieth Century, the building itself surely dated to well back into the Nineteenth Century. (Note: You can actually see the belltower of the church damaged in June of 2023 in the far background.)

Bohemian Hill is notable for the survival for several alley houses as well as its original narrow streets. Most of it is now gone, and I’m afraid more will be lost soon. You can see the house in question in two posts: once in August of 2011 (sixth photo) and once in January of 2014 (seventh photo).

Thanks for sharing some more information on the part’s of “greater Soulard” that are still being allowed in to be turned into warzone conditions like rubble 🙁 The part’s of South City’s older sections that haven’t been “successfully” appropriated into single generation, young people hang out areas. That nearby former St. Paul/Luke’s church and Saint Louis Place’s Augustine parish both being within some ruined beyond repair conditions. Along with that now long gone Baltic Sea yellow John Loler house being some “who cares” distant memory. Both within and underneath it’s Second Empire mansard roof. 🙁 I also want to thank you for informing me about this IT executive Jim McKelvey’s speculative land hoarding activities within the Saint Louis area as well too.
Even so, I’m happy that one of surviving buildings could survive one of it’s recent fires.
