I’d looked at South Ninth Street in Soulard back in June of 2015, but I thought it would be worthwhile to take a deeper examination of the street.

This first section between Sidney and Victor was once South 8th Street (logical because the next street over to the east is South 7th, after all), but also Decatur Street at one point.

The Second Empire dominates this block, which makes sense as the street hadn’t even been cut through yet as evidenced in Compton and Dry’s Pictorial St. Louis from 1876. The now vanished church and school of the Assumption are nos. 16 and 17.

Below, there is a later addition from possibly the first decade of the Twentieth Century which joined the earlier houses from the 1880s.

At the end of the block is one of the many corner businesses that Soulard still possesses compared to many neighborhoods.
