Update: Demolished in June of 2017.
It’s sad seeing the Southern Funeral Home in this condition. The former owner gave me a tour last year (sorry, no pictures), and the interior is in remarkably good condition. It’s been scarred by fires in the basement several times (watch a video of one fire here), and it’s got asbestos issues, but I hope one day it could be saved.
There’s an apartment upstairs, where presumably the night pickup man or undertaker lived.
I fear our Alderman, Tom Villa is out to see this torn down. He has made comments to this effect at our community meetings. He has supported the destruction of so many significant buildings in our neighborhood including the Masonic Hall, Ivory Theater power plant and Sts. Mary and Joseph School. He needs to go.
Does anyone know who owns the building now?
A resident of Ballwin, MO.
Sounds about right…
I have photos.
Maybe someone like Elliott could investigate and find out why the Funeral Home and the building next door are allowed to sit year after year continuing to deteriorate, adding to the problems being experienced in the area. Does anyone know what is going on with these two buildings?
It is now demolished, here is a video I took of the interior several weeks ago.

Wow, it had deteriorated substantially since the time I visited.
