St. Andrew’s Cinema, St. Charles

St. Andrew’s or Andrews Cinema opened in 1970 and is one of the last of the movie theaters of its stylistic kind left in the St. Louis region.

It passed through a large number of owners over the years, but eventually ended up being a second run theater selling tickets at a steeply discounted price.

As far as I can tell, the theater is now out of business, as the last movie in the marquee, Davenport Cabin, which doesn’t even show up in IMDb, had a release date back in February.

Likewise, when I called the phone number listed on-line, a recorded message said it was out of service.

Does this mean that this last holdout and survivor is now closed?

Saw a late showing of the Marx Brothers movie Duck Soup there in 1974. People actually used to do stuff like that in St Louis!

The Andrew’s Cinema was originally part of the Arthur Theaters chain and it opened in 1970 as the chain sought to continue to expand in St. Louis County. Arthur theaters acquired what was part of the the old Skouras Brothers theatre chain in the city which included the flagship Ambassador Theatre downtown. When Arthur Theaters went bankrupt, Wehrenberg Theaters took over the the Andrew’s Cinema, then it later became an independent operation.

The old dollar show. It caught fire a while ago then someone rebuilt it .I thought it opened back up in the last year or two.

Based on comments from their Facebook page, their movies had tepid attendance after reopening and they’ve been leaning heavier on private event hosting (occasionally still showing movies for special events like Rocky Horror, etc). Last sign of any life or activity was Halloween 2025 for Rocky / other horror movies, which remains up on their outdoor marquee as of this date. Currently on the doors are signs from St. Charles County stating “Uninhabitable / Unusable Order,” dated 11-21-25.

Cool, thanks for the update. That sign from St. Charles County wasn’t on the door when we went by.
