St. Joseph Roman Catholic Cathedral

Sitting on a ridge that gives its name to Cathedral Hill, the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph dominates the eastern end of the slope.

Surrounded by intact urban fabric, the cathedral’s brick exterior blends in well with the neighborhood.

The building below functions as the offices for the cathedral as well as a food pantry.

Across the street is a row of apartment buildings.

The cathedral itself is sort of a Roman restrained Romanesque Revival with elements of the Renaissance Revival, with an obvious narthex built on the front at a later date.

The side of the cathedral features restrained pilasters and equally restrained transepts.

The interior is beautiful, with a rich blue barrel vault flanked by two aisles set off by a colonnade of Ionic columns.

The stained glass is likewise simple.

The choir loft holds a huge organ.

Most likely due to changes post-Vatican II, the high altar was brought further out from the apse into the crossing with the transepts.

The streets nearby have some nice houses, as well. It was refreshing not to see huge parking lots destroying the neighborhood around the Cathedral.
