St. Louis Place and JeffVanderLou, West of Parnell Avenue

One of the saddest parts of the city of St. Louis are the streets surrounding St. Augustine, in an area heavily destroyed by brick theft and neglect. The church is still stunning, despite showing the ravages of deferred maintenance.

The area around the church is slowly becoming a wasteland, even if a few streets are relatively intact.

Above and below, these two houses show that some houses had been renovated in the 1950’s, and their large windows are certainly unique on this block.

I was stunned to see one of my favorite buildings in the neighborhood, a turreted corner store building, had finally been demolished, having faced the ravages of brick theft.

  1. It's "Parnell," not "Pernod." The latter is in South St. Louis. It always amazes me when driving with gkids anywhere North (usually on I70) and I have to explain that "Yes, kids, this really WAS a thriving neigborhood."
