George Washington Statue, Lafayette Park

The George Washington Monument in Lafayette Park is the only public memorial to the president that I know of in the city. On this Presidents Day, I was also thinking that I don’t know of any memorials to Abraham Lincoln. Does anyone know of one? This statue has an interesting story, as it is a…

A Foggy New Year’s Day

I woke up New Year’s Day to heavy fog blanketing the city, so the logical thing to do was to go photograph the tallest building I could find. I first hit St. Francis de Sales. I then went and looked at the Gateway Arch, which was heavily obscured by the fog, its top almost invisible…

Dan Fogelberg Memorial, Peoria

“Dan Fogelberg? Who’s Dan Fogelberg?” As at least one friend has remarked to me recently, Google Maps has been arbitrarily highlighting some features and ignoring other more important landmarks. Recently, while scanning around Peoria on Google Satellite, one such arbitrary landmark popped up near the shores of Lake Peoria: The Dan Fogelberg Memorial. Peoria, as…

Fayette County Courthouse, Washington Court House, Ohio

The Fayette County Courthouse is one of the more impressive that I have seen in America, and it is well preserved and maintained. Opened in 1885, it was built between 1882-1884. It is built in what I might call a late Italianate, Second Empire hybrid style which defies easy categorization, as is so common in…

It commemorates the three editors of the Westliche Post, a German language newspaper that I can attest…

Twenty Years Since 9/11, Revisiting Washington, DC, Part One

As a few of my readers know, I was living in Washington, DC on September 11, 2001, exactly two miles away from the Pentagon when the plane crashed into it. I moved back at Christmastime of 2006, and had only been back to the District of Columbia twice since then. I just returned for the…

St. Louis Award, Forest Park

Donated in 1965, this sculpture commemorates the St. Louis Award. It sits behind some bushes close to the World’s Fair Pavilion and the northeast entrance to the Zoo.

Friedrich Jahn Monument

The Friedrich Jahn Monument is on a stretch of road that was removed in the 1990s during renovations of Forest Park. Jahn founded the movement for gymnastics in Germany, and there were many such Turnvereinen in St. Louis. Most are now closed, but they were once a formidable social and political force in St. Louis.
