The Cathedral Basilica

The New Cathedral really is a wonderful, unique building.

What is interesting is that the capitals on the columns and other small sculptural details appear to have been left uncarved. As has been common for millennia, sculptors often left the fine carving until the stone was in situ to protect against damage in transport of delicate stonework. It looks like they never got around to carving many of the stones at the cathedral.

The late autumn light on the front was wonderful last Saturday.

  1. Its going to be hard to look at the Cathedral the same ever again, no matter how beautiful it is, now that the San Luis is gone. It is no longer an urban cathedral. Now it will be the terminus of a suburban "campus" complete with surface parking, just like SLU.
